Try zfs root. I use it on all my home systems and (just so you can see how flexible it is) on a 256MB KVM. For the same reasons you want BTRFS. But forget about rsync - try znapzend (google it) - much better alternative. Full system recovery with zfs is very easy. And snapshots (even if not sent to remote site) are a God send. NB.

Jan 15, 2019 · The reason is that CoW (copy-on-write) can corrupt virtual filesystem journals or, for virtual guest filesystems using CoW (btrfs, ZFS, et al) the entire file system can be corrupted. This is not limited to btrfs. This is true for all VM host CoW file systems that do not automatically tune for workloads (basically, all but recent versions of ZFS).
The CoW-based file systems (zfs, btrfs) are slower than less feature-rich systems, and they are more dependent on having sufficiently powerful hardware backing them. As in a corporate setting, I would definitely take the time to run benchmarks with my expected load, to get first-hand experience with performance vs features.

Jul 20, 2020 · My first btrfs review more than 8 years ago was promising but sadly, btrfs has not achieved the “production ready” status at all since then. This means that btrfs is not good enough for the enterprise, and thus just for playground stuff for now. ZFS on the other hand, powers the largest enterprises.

Probably you're going through Fuse to ZFS. Fuse is marvelous, but it may be injecting overhead. I use BTRFS on my backup server. It has some wonderful features, if it will only hold up. For example my backup server is in the garage (in case of theft or fire) and reaches out once/week to rsync backups from my other systems.

For those who really want ZFS support, OMV .6, which will probably be out in around May/June, should support BTRFS, which is essentially what ZFS is for Linux. If you need a NAS operating system, I'd highly recommend OMV.

I was wondering If i'd be able to mount the Btrfs file system to OMV 5 and use the data as is. Or is it safe to backup the data to another drive and start OMV 5 from the scratch.

AFAIK btrfs doesn't have its own cache thing, but I've been using a SSD on my rust btrfs-raid1 through bcache for a yearish. I'd switched from btrfs-raid10 to 1 because the cache alleviated any bottleneck (I have data, servers, and database on the same volume, which is fine with the cache).
